On the night of Wednesday, February 22nd, a special event took place at "The Cross Hands", the current venue of the best chess club in Bristol. For the past four years, Derrick and Elmira have given us a wonderful match room and graciously allowed the club to use a portion of the bar area for casual chess, which has undoubtedly helped to attract newcomers and create a relaxed and welcoming environment for all members.
Two matches took place upstairs between Downend D & Clifton B and Downend E & University C. The former resulted in a win for the D team, while the latter unfortunately saw a no-show from the opposition, leading to a win for E team. So, two wins to see us off. Meanwhile, downstairs, a lively and friendly atmosphere prevailed, as a good turn-out of players battled it out over the board.
However, the main event of the evening was the opportunity to express gratitude and appreciation to Derrick and Elmira, who were present at the pub. The club presented them with a card and flowers, thanking them for their support over the past four years, which has enabled the club to thrive and grow.
As we bid farewell to "The Cross Hands", we look forward to the next chapter in our story, as we move to the "Fishponds Club". Despite the change of venue, we remain committed to fostering the same relaxed and welcoming environment that has been the hallmark of the club's success. With the support and passion of its members, the Downend and Fishponds chess club is sure to continue to thrive and grow for many years to come.
_ Edit by Ian: Many thanks to Grant and Greg who moved our cupboard and equipment from the Cross Hands to the Fishponds Club today. It now sits securely downstairs from the playing area. The first match at the new venue is on March 1st and should be well worth supporting by all who can make it next week._
