Cabot B could only field 3 players for this fixture.
Playing the Benko gambit with black on board 1, Mark eventually had to trade his fianchettoed bishop. In a tense queen side logjam Mark's ensuing counterattack lost him the exchange which was decisive when already a pawn down, despite a late attempt to a draw by repetition at the end.
Shaun had the white pieces on board 2 and summarised the game in his own words as follows: "Robbie responded with with an early g6 in the Sicilian to my e4. I have started to learn John Nunn's book and for the first time I played I the Maroczy Bind. I quickly found myself out of my knowledge of the opening, Robbie had a good position moving into the middle game, whilst I had a cramped position and exposed myself to a king side attack from strong white bishop and queen on the h3 pawn. Robbie also had a monster of a knight on e4. However I managed to untangle my position and started my own attack with 2 rooks lined up on the f file. Robbie countered the attack by forcing an exchange with one of my rooks. There then followed a number of exchanges leaving black with a knight and 4 pawns versus my white bishop with 4 pawns on white squares. I think the draw was there but panicked over his time advantage and made a mistake giving one of the pawns away and the match."
Hector was on board 3 with the black pieces. His game appeared fairly even until a mistake by his opponent afforded him a chance to attack with his queen and force a checkmate.
The final outcome was 2-2 since the E team won board 4 by default.
