I (Greg) was on board 1 with the black pieces against Tiiu Loog, a strong player rated nearly 1700. I tried the Dutch defence but never managed to get my knight to e4. Pieces were exchanged fairly quickly and we reached an end game where I had a rook and five pawns vs her rook and seven pawns. I was on the lookout for tactics but no opportunities arose. Tiiu played with an accuracy of 89% and I resigned when her pawns became unstoppable. I managed 81% accuracy.
Board 2. John Paines, with the white pieces, says “I played the 1600+ Reuben Leonard, who played a Sicilian Dragon. It led to a very open, even game with a steady stream of exchanges. I offered a draw as early as move 20 but Reuben evidently thought he could beat me, and declined it. After all the pieces were off the board, the game reduced to a queening race where I calculated that I could use my new queen to skewer through Reuben’s king and capture his, but had unfortunately overlooked that the square I would need to apply check from was protected by one of his pawns! The game ended with a series of checks, and a draw was agreed.”
Board 3. Nick Woods says “I was Black, my opponent opened with the English, not an opening I am too familiar with. I did however vaguely remember a line I think it's called the Agincourt Defence; it's like the Maroczy bind but for black. After this we both had a couple of attacks which came to nothing. I've run the game through Stockfish and both of us played the top two moves from there so we ended up agreeing on a draw”.
Board 4. Charlie Higenbottam, playing white, says “It was equal in material and position until I blundered a pawn. However, that didn't matter as the position was equal so we drew.”
Board 5. Vivaan Suresha says “The game was against a highly rated opponent. It was a tough match however I managed to defend my pawns and at the end I was up by a pawn. I managed to win in the end because of a few mistakes by my opponent. I was very happy as this was my first win of the season”
Board 6. Danny Wilkins vs Roger Coles. Danny says "Playing as white, after a solid Reti opening I was actually in a good position and +2.05 up on the computer analysis until in the 15th move I missed the capture of a free Bishop in favour of attacking his Queen.
