Tyson's Choice

Tyson's Choice

2011-02-27 - Harvey, Marcus 1-0 Clarke, Brandon

Tyson - This is arguably the best game of 2011 by anyone, anywhere. I was the controller so I saw it live. It's a five star brilliancy yet you won't find it on the internet. Hold your breath as White goes on a sacrificial rampage: One Pawn and then another, an Exchange, a Knight and then a Rook! At the point the Knight is accepted then it's mate in fourteen!" A comment from a BCM editor went "That's going on my bedroom ceiling!

1988-12-06 - Brigden, Michael 0-1 Mordue, Tyson

Tyson - A decisive game from the 1988 Club Championship. It's probably my best club championship game ever, but it says more about Mike Wood (yes Mike Wood, not Mike Brigden) than about me.

1985-04-25 - Ashby, Alan 0-1 Mordue, Tyson

Tyson - A game for those Sicilian players who worry about going under to big Kingside attacks when White pushes Pawns in front of his own King. This approach does leave gaps for the Black pieces to exploit later on. Here Black's unexpected 21st move forces White into a poor endgame and the aforementioned gaps come back to haunt the first player.

2006-12-03 - Bayliss, Lyall 0-1 Mordue, Tyson

Tyson - This is an interesting game and also memorable for me. The memorable bit is that it was the start of a nine-game winning streak in the 4NCL, which culminated in my FIDE Elo exceeding 2300 and my being able to claim the FIDE Master (FM) title. The interesting bit is the Queenless middle-game where the advantage goes back and forth amidst various complications. When the dust settles it looks like the opposite-coloured Bishops will guarantee White a draw, However, White's King is stuck in the corner and ultimately gets mated there!

2006-05-07 - Hall, Daniel 0-1 Mordue, Tyson

Tyson - Played on my birthday!

2013-05-18 - Mansson, James 0-1 Ross, Chris

Tyson - This very original game was featured in my short-lived Club Knight column in BCM. It was played by Chris Ross, the UK's number one blind player, and features an extremely instructive way of meeting the Catalan Opening. Most of the notes are Chris's (marked CR) but he was unaware of how amusing the game was until I pointed it out. If you want your chess education mixed with some fun then this one does the trick. What's more you can leave the engine to one side. This game features very fine positional judgement that computers simply don't understand.

1983-10-01 - Cowling, Miles 0-1 Beaumont, Chris

Tyson - This one is an odd choice because there's no Downend player involved, but then it's an exceptional game. Chris Beaumont arrived in Bristol in 1983 and quickly made his mark by sharing first place in the 1st Yeovil Congress. This game is against a player who was graded 200 at that time. Cowling makes an error in the opening which hands Chris a clear advantage. At move 25 Chris sacs a Rook to completely expose the White King which is cut off from all its pieces. Can you spot the mate in 14?

2008-05-10 - Mordue, Tyson 1-0 Bicknell, Carl

Tyson - Tyson's best impression of Tal. Black makes an inaccuracy whilst playing a Sicilian Najdorf and the refutation is spectacular.

1984-05-28 - Rossiter, Philip ½-½ Mordue, Tyson

Tyson - Another game to prove that not all the games on this page are going to be Mordue wins. This game has never been published before although Alex Easton did refer to it in his report in BCT on the 1984 Cotswold Congress. It's a battle royal in a Sicilian Najdorf. Promising junior Phillip Rossiter makes a typical sac on b5. Tyson counters with his own sac on e5. A tremendous clash of the pieces follows and at one point Tyson has all his pieces en prise! If you like complicated tactical games then this one is for you.

2008-12-07 - Mordue, Tyson 1-0 Jones, Victor

Tyson - This one won a share of The Best Annotated Game Prize in the 4NCL 2008-9 season. It's a model example of executing a chosen plan and it's capped by some nice tactics. Particular attention should be given to the note after Black's 27th move. The engines find an astonishing refutation to a suggested Black defence that's well worth seeing.

2008-09-01 - Mordue, Tyson 1-0 Gregory, K

Tyson - The Best Game Prize winner from the 2008 Paignton Congress. Actually Tyson was just trying to avoid losing a Pawn out of the opening, but the after the sac on c6 it's one almighty clash of the pieces.

1980-10-02 - Brigden, Michael ½-½ Mordue, Tyson

Tyson - The decisive game from the 1980 Club Championship. An early Queenless middle-game arises with a big plus for White. The turning point is Tyson's 33rd move which he sealed. The rest of the game is impeccable adjournment analysis with both King's fate in the balance as each plays for the win. Much to learn here about simplified endings, even though the players don't get that far!
