2018 Bristol Blitz Qualifier

There were several regional events held across the country, with the top two men and top two women from each regional event going through to the finals day to be held in Birmingham on Saturday 1st December. The venue is yet to be announced.

One of the eight regional qualifying events was held in Bristol on Saturday 9th September, at Bristol Grammar School in their spacious 1532 theatre. There were 15 rounds to play in the day, and the time control was only 3 mins with a 2 second increment. It was a hectic schedule, but luckily we had Tom Thorpe and Geoff Gammon to control it with their usual efficiency and aplomb. It even finished before schedule!

42 players entered from around Bristol and beyond. This included GM Nick Pert, IM James Sherwin, WIM Fiona Steil-Antoni, and notable others such as the Downend & Fishponds' contingent: Oliver Stubbs, Chirag Hosdurga and Fedor Turetskiy.

Nick Pert

Who would I be to judge, but is that really a blitz-worthy opening?

Our boys did themselves proud, with Chirag just pipping Oli to the under 1750 rating prize, both scoring a very respectable 8/15. Oli's consolation for missing out on the dough was a solid rating performance of over 2000 and getting the chance to play both James Sherwin, and GM Nick Pert.

It's great to see Jim back in action! Clearly the time controls weren't short enough! He probably wasn't smiling after Oli was finished with him.

Fedor also had an extremely solid day scoring 7/15. With this he managed a rating performance of an amazing 300 points above his actual FIDE rating!

The moment Philip Burnett realises he's made a mistake against Fedor, namely, playing Fedor.

If you take a look on chessit, Dave has uploaded a couple of short clips of Chirag and Oli in action. (Chirag drawing with Joey Stewart (2085), and Oli beating Paul Hampton (2192)).

One other excellent result from the day, was by Bristol league's own Alice Lampard (University), who qualified with Fiona Steil-Antoni for the women's final.
