Downend Juniors vs GM Arkell

Intrigue

The start of a long evening!

Oli and Toby were invited to a Simul at Bristol Grammar School yesterday evening with GM Keith Arkell. Well, someone had to give him a good game!

Intrigue

Plenty of challenges for the GM!

Intrigue

Oli intrigued with Toby's position.

The problem was that it was supposed to finish at 6pm, but in fact went on to 7pm, mainly because Oli and Toby were the most stubborn opponents. They were the last to finish out of 30 opponents, with GM Arkell having to scratch his head on several occasions on how to breakthrough. It took him over 60 moves in each game, but as we know Keith doesn't mind if it takes him 100 moves to win.

Intrigue

Toby making GM Arkell work.

Intrigue

Toby finding his position very amusing.

It was quickly back to David's grab a sandwich, change, and with their clocks ticking, up to to the club for their match. Toby won in superb style, a knight sacrifice then checkmate in two moves. Oli did an Arkell and ground out the draw!

Intrigue

Back to business.

Intrigue

Grinding out an endgame.
