2017 Steve Boniface Memorial Congress

Fabrizio Magrini 4/5 (2nd)
Attila Reznak 3/5 (3rd=)

It was a great start for Attila as on Saturday evening after 3 rounds he was on 3/3. However in round 4 he couldn't quite break through and had to accept a draw. In round five it was Fabrizio vs Attila with all to play for. This time Fabrizio came out on top and in doing so leap-frogged into 2nd place with Attila ending up joint 3rd.

The overall Open winner was 15 year old England junior Koby Kalavannan. Koby won a long fought game against Ashley Stewart in the final round to finish on top with 4½/5 and take 1st prize. It was the first time Toby had played in a Bristol Congress event and his unbeaten play assured him of being awarded the FM title at the end of September.

Full results from the Open can be found on the chess-results page and the games are available on chessit.

We had 3 juniors in the Major with Jack making his debut moving up from the Minor section. Toby was appearing in his 2nd major and Oli in his third:

Oliver Stubbs 3/5
Toby Kan 2/5
Jack Tye 1/5

Oli managed to beat two members of the Fursman family along the way. Toby had an excellent draw against the 150-graded Tim Woodward and Jack also had an excellent draw against 145-graded Alan Papier.

There is an accompanying gallery of our players in action, as well as the complete gallery on chessit. Jon Fisher has also written a report of the weekend.
