2017/18 Season

Last Updated: 11:48 12th December

11 Dec 2017:

Though I'm sure you saved the calendar date (Tuesday 2nd January) for the buzzer tournament the other day, the entry form is now live!

John keeps us updated on the London Chess Classic Rapidplay with photos by David!

5 Dec 2017:

The B-team were able to exact revenge on Horfield B for the A-team with a great 4-2 win.

So it wasn't the D-team that had a great night against North Bristol A (though that match is soon!), it was the minor knockout team winning 4-2 against North Bristol!

Update: Ian has written a match report for the B-team match!

4 Dec 2017:

While many eyes are fixed on the 'excitement' at the London Chess Classic, David sends us news of Toby's time there:

After being duffed up by Richard L on Tuesday night during the Downend brawl between C & D. Toby didn't have time to lick his wounds too long. On Wednesday night we set off to Deepmind (Google's Artifical Intelligence division) at their London HQ to play some more chess. This time his opponent was world number 4 Fabiano Caruana and a group game against Vishy Anand... Unfortunately he was duffed up again! Still managed to enjoy the day and met many GMs and world champions past and present.

A small gallery has been added from the day, with links to a bigger one!

29 Nov 2017:

Not for the first time this season the B-team faced the strongest possible opposition as Bath A brought a player back from 15 years abroad! Nevertheless, it was a close match and the Bs were unlucky to just miss out 2½-3½.

Update: Pictures from John and a match report from Ian!

28 Nov 2017:

The A-team may have been a little unlucky to draw 3-3 against a weaker than expected Bristol University. Watch me justify that claim in the match report.

The C vs D-team grudge match also ended in a 3-3 draw, but it wasn't staged! Ian tells us more.

The F-team was also in action against a university, but this time it was Bath's. Unfortunately, they proved too strong and the final score was 1-3.

As if that wasn't enough excitement, there's news about upcoming tournaments! First, on 10th December is a Christmas Blitz at the Cross Hands Pub. Spaces are limited so enter as soon as possible! Also, the date for the club's ever-popular Christmas lightning has been set as January the 2nd. Put it in your diaries now!

26 Nov 2017:

The 2017 Bristol Winter Congress was another rousing success. For more details on the club's performance check out John's congress report. There's also a new gallery with photos by John and Dave.

22 Nov 2017:

The E-team are off the mark! Despite being out-graded by the very strong Bath B team, some excellent results saw our team nab the win 3½-2½.

21 Nov 2017:

The D-team were up against a very strong Horfield C-team, but some excellent scoring on the lower boards kept them in the match. Unfortunately the increment couldn't save them and the final score was 2-4. Don't forget about Nigel's match report!

The F-team didn't know what to expect from the largely ungraded North Bristol C-team, but very quick wins from the juniors drew the match 2-2. (For those keeping track, it means that the juniors scored 3½/4!)

19 Nov 2017:

We now have two national champions! Yuvraj scored a fantastic 9/10 in the Minor section of the 2017 British Rapidplay Championship to finish joint first in a field of about 50 strong players. What an excellent first season with the club.

16 Nov 2017:

Once again the A-team were able to bail out my horrendous blunders and win the match 4-2 against South Bristol A. Match report to appear in the fullness of time.

Update: Look! It's the match report based on what I can remember from last week!

There's also Stephen's game against Gareth Morris now available to view!

14 Nov 2017:

It was a very close match for the B-team away to Clifton A, but with the score finishing at 2½-3½ it just wasn't to be.

Update: Ian fills us in with the B-team's match

The D-team had a tough night against a very strong Thornbury and lost 1½-4½.

Things went a little better for the F-team who managed to hold Yate B to a 2-2 draw.

12 Nov 2017:

David has more junior news from the weekend:

The Somerset Junior Grand Prix kicked off last month with an impressive showing from our Downend Juniors with a 1st, 2nd and 3rd placing for Yurvaj, Toby and Aron. This weekend was the second event at a very impressive venue, the Somerset County Cricket ground. However, it was not just an impressive venue, there were some very impressive performances from our juniors once again. This time Aron showed the way, winning 5 games out 6 and coming 1st. Toby on 4½/6 in 2nd and Yuvraj on 4 in 3rd. So a Downend 1, 2, 3 again. Fantastic stuff and a big congratulations to Aron for an outstanding performance this weekend. We all know what a great player Aron is at Downend, but the rest of Somerset just found out too. Congratulations to all!

Update: And John fills us in on the club's exploits at the Torbay congress.

9 Nov 2017:

When this tweet was sent, it was fair to say things weren't looking great for the C team away to North Bristol A, but they managed to come back and draw the match 3-3!

Update: Ian has let fire with a cracking match report!

7 Nov 2017:

The B-team had a very tough night hosting current league leaders Horifeld A, losing 1-5. Now complete with match report!

Update: The E-team's night wasn't any better against a very strong Keynsham A and we lost ½-5½. Time to regroup and start winning again!

2 Nov 2017:

The B-team fought hard but only narrowly won 3½-2½ against the University A-team. I'm sure a match report will appear soon. After all, John sent me pictures for it.

Update: Mike has written a great match report!

31 Oct 2017:

Following their continual successes in every chess venture, juniors stepped in on the A-team for a number of absent players. Unfortunately, Bath A were too strong and our A-team lost 2-4. A match report is being fabricated as you read.

The tough night continued as the C-team, away to Grendel, lost 2-4. Ian can tell us more.

Update: Voilà! A report mostly by Dave.

29 Oct 2017:

Well, there's lots to catch up on!

On Saturday the biannual club match against Pentyrch was played. The seven-board match was won 4½-2½ and Nigel has written a great match report. There's also Neil's game from the match against our own Richard Livermore, which has been annotated by Ian. Also, David Kan was in action with his camera to take a gallery of pictures of the day.

On the Sunday it was the Chipping Sodbury Rapidplay, this time organised by the club's John Stubbs and Geoff Gammon. David has written a congress report and taken some more photos!

26 Oct 2017:

The F-team did very well to draw 2-2 away to a strong North Bristol B,. The white pieces clearly taking advantage of their initiative.

Update: The D-team had a tough night against a very strong University B, losing 2-4. Nigel has written a match report and we also have Toby's excellent win against a much higher graded opponent.

19 Oct 2017:

The F-team had a great night against a three-player University C(!) team winning 3½-½.

Update: The D-team narrowly missed a win against South Bristol B and came away with a 3-3. Nigel has written the match report and Richard's game from the night is also available to view.

17 Oct 2017:

The A-team were rather lucky with their 3½-2½ win over Clifton A. Read how lucky in the match report.

The C-team had a tougher time against a very strong University B and lost 2-4. Ian has written about it in the match report

Update: The E-team had a surprisingly tough time against Horfield D and lost 2-4.

16 Oct 2017:

David Kan fills us in on more junior exploits:

It was the start of the Somerset Junior Chess Grand Prix this weekend at St Saviours School in Bath. 4 Downend Juniors were participating include Jack in the Under 16s, Aron, Toby and Yuraj in the Under 12. It was a very competitive event with many Somerset Junior County players present.

In the Under 12 section, all juniors did fantastically as usual finishing 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Results below:

Player Pts
1st Yuvraj Kumar 5½ (5+ 1= 0-)
2nd Toby Kan 5 (4+ 2= 0-)
3rd Aron Saunders 4½ (4+ 1= 1-)

In the U16s, Jack was not feeling 100% and was not playing his best chess. Still he showed great resolve and fought on finishing on 2/6.

For other Downend Juniors who would like to be involved, the next events are detailed on

Update: There was plenty more chess happening at the weekend, and John fills us in on the 52nd Dorset Congress at The Elstead Hotel in Bournemouth in his congress report.

10 Oct 2017:

The first A-team vs B-team match of the season went relatively smoothly for the As who managed a reasonable 4-2 win. Don't forget about the brief match report in which I praise Andrew and Nigel's enterprising and dominant play.

The D-team had a tough night against Clevedon B and lost 1½-4½.

Update: Jack's excellent win is now available on our Games page.

8 Oct 2017:

We may not be entering the main 4NCL as a club this season, but we did have a go at the rapidplay. Read all about our results in the congress report.

5 Oct 2017:

It was a close match but the C-team managed to get there in the end, beating Thornbury 3½-2½.

Update: Now complete with Ian's match report!

3 Oct 2017:

There was plenty of action last night and I missed it all what with being the last to finish (though not the last to lose!). Clear title favourites Horfield B continued their epic season start with a win over the A-team (2½-3½). Match reports and other results to follow soon!

While you wait there's a spectacular debut game from Aron Saunders; the newest of the juniors!

Update: The D-team had a tough night against a very strong Grendel, losing 2-4. Read all about it in the drama-free match report.

I finished the A-team match report just as Dave sent me the games from the night, and you can bet your bottom dollar I'm not rewriting it!

It wasn't all bad news on the night as the F-team scored a major 2½-1½ upset against the much higher graded Clevedon C!

26 Sep 2017:

The B-team had a draw-ish night against Clevedon A, but splitting the point was not an option for the English Rapidplay champion and the team took the two points with a 3½-2½ win. Read all about it in Ian's match report.

Update: The D-team also managed a very successful 3-3 draw away to a very strong Cabot A. Nigel's match report is required reading as it includes a useful tidbit on the rules of pawn promotion! (Now with confirmation from arbiter Geoff Gammon!)

25 Sep 2017:

I went to my first tournament in about 18 months and decided to write about it.

Update: Oli also went to a tournament for the first time in about 18 days and came away with fantastic results .

21 Sep 2017:

We are the ECF website of the year! Well done to everyone that produces content for the website (and reminds me to update it) and thanks to Ian for his excellent nomination.

19 Sep 2017:

The B-team got their season underway with an excellent 4½-1½ win over a five-man South Bristol A.

The E-team suffered a narrow 2½-3½ defeat against a very strong Yate A, in what was another strong night for the black pieces.

Ian, who appears to be taking over the role of "scribe for two teams", regales us with a match report for the B-team.

Update: Don't forget to check out our Games page (and submit your own games!), Ian's exciting Dragon slaying and Mike's crazy Benko are already up.

18 Sep 2017:

Clevedon B staged an incredible 3-point comeback to hold the C-team to a 3-3 draw.

Update: Ian has completed the fixture off with a match report!

12 Sep 2017:

The A-team continued their fine start with a 4-2 win over a weakened Clifton B. Match report to come once I've seen the games.

The C-team were perhaps a little unlucky to lose 2-4 against a very strong South Bristol B.

The F-team were also playing at the temporary Clifton venue, but as I was sulking over my loss I completely forgot to get the score.

Update: John has sent me the scores. It was a close 1½-2½ loss for the F-team against Clifton D.

Also, there's not one but two match reports! Insightful analysis from Ian on the C-team and random mumblings from me on the A-team.

7 Sep 2017:

Black pieces ruled the board as the F-team drew 2-2 away to South Bristol D.

5 Sep 2017:

There were plenty of decisive results in the A-team's opening 4½-1½ win against Horfield A, but I'll save the details for the match report.

In the C-team match-up, Horfield got their revenge as they scored the five points in the 1-5 score.

The E-team played their away match to Clifton C at the cricket club due to the latter's venue problems. Unfortunately the "home" advantage told and the score was 2½-3½.

Update: The C-team match now has a match report!

27 Aug 2017:

Update: Some news from the Steve Boniface Congress. Congress report and links and gallery thanks to John Stubbs.

22 Aug 2017:

The final night of the summer rapid didn't see a huge upset in the final rankings, but there were plenty of upsets in the games:

Place Player Pts
1st Attila Reznak 15½/18
2nd Morris Stranger 14½/18
3rd Henry Duncanson 13½/18

Most of the entrants went home with a prize or book (which sounds like more work, but they seemed happy). Congratulations to all the winners and thanks to Jerry for organising his first Summer Rapid. The final wallchart and the best three performance rankings can also be found on our Events page and John captured a few photos from the night.

In new season news, the team registrations are now correct on our Players page.

21 Aug 2017:

Fixtures are out!

14 Aug 2017:

Junior news from the Terafinals! Get the news in David's report and gallery.

8 Aug 2017:

The leaderboard of the of the summer rapidplay has been shaken quite dramatically with the departure of Chris:

Place Player Pts
1st= Attila Reznak 11½/18
1st= Morris Stranger 11½/18
3rd David Painter-Kooiman 10½/18

The full wallchart can also be found on our Events page. Don't forget, the winners are decided on their three best performances, so there's still lots to play for! The final night will be 22nd August.

7 Aug 2017:

Full-time Downend & Fishponds journalist John Stubbs has written a report of the club's showing at the 2017 British Championships and of course there's an accompanying gallery. It's also worth noting that club member wannabe Daniel Young also qualified for next year's Championships with his excellent performance in the Major Open.

1 Aug 2017:

Downend & Fishponds now has a club profile on the chessjournalapp blog. Thanks to Richard Livermore and Jon Fisher!

27 Jul 2017:

New grades are out! If you want to do more grade searching, check out the ECF grading database.

23 Jul 2017:

First there was the Northern Gigafinals, and now there's the Southern Gigafinals. In the U15s Thomas scored a very strong 2½/6 (which included a game against the 206 top seed!), however it was Oli that took the prizes with an incredible undefeated 5/6 (half a point behind the top seed) including some excellent results against very strong players. Oli's second place means that he joins Toby with a ticket to the Terafinals. Don't forget to check out the gallery of the tournament.

18 Jul 2017:

After something of a delay in unlocking the building, round 2 of the summer rapidplay was a success. Current leaders:

Place Player Pts
1st Chris Russell 8½/12
2nd Morris Stranger 7½/12
3rd= Gareth Morris 7/12
3rd= Graham Iwi 7/12

The full round 2 wallchart can be found on our Events page.

The next night is 8th August so put it in your diaries now! Watch out for Henry, Attila, and Fabrizio.

16 Jul 2017:

David has written a report about Aron, Jack, and Toby's successes at the 2017 Northern Gigafinal. Also his photos have been saved in another new gallery.

12 Jul 2017:

It was the first junior match for the club. John has written up a match report complete with pictures of the night.

4 Jul 2017:

Clifton's annual Graeme Thomson Memorial Rapidplay was another great success, raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support. There were also some great results for the club:

Section Player Pts
Open Lewis Martin 4/6
Open Jerry Humphreys 2/6
Major Oliver Stubbs 5/6
Major Grant Daly 3/6

Those results saw Lewis take joint 3rd (with virtual club member Daniel Young) in the Open and Oli take 2nd in the Major. John Stubbs was also kind enough to take some pictures of the day.

23 Jun 2017:

The first night of the summer rapidplay was a great success. There was plenty of enterprising chess and some 'off-beat' openings. The current leaders are:

Place Player Pts
1st Chris Russell 5½/6
2nd= Henry Duncanson 5/6
2nd= Gareth Morris 5/6

There are plenty of people sharing 4th place with 4½/6 and there isn't enough space in the news to detail the leaders of the different 'sections'. Of course, we couldn't be chess players without wanting those details. Downend the round 1 wallchart.

If you missed the first night, fear not! The second night is on July 18th. If you can't wait that long (and who can?), this Sunday (July 2nd) there is Clifton's Graeme Thomson Memorial Rapidplay. Please do try and attend as it's always a great event which raises money for Macmillan Cancer Support. Entries (as they get updated) can be round on the chess-results page.

19 Jun 2017:

Well there's plenty to catch up on. First, we have a new gallery of some of the players scoring well at the 2017 Bristol Summer Congress.

Then we have our club AGM report complete with an accompanying gallery. With our AGM out of the way, don't forget that this now means that club memberships are due!

Following the rousing success the club has seen this year, Ian has added to our History page.

There will also be a junior match where Downend & Fishponds' youngest will be pitting their skills against Chepstow juniors on July 11th with some of the club's strongest players in attendance to provide post-match analysis. It should be a great event if you're able to attend and we're hoping it might blossom into a yearly match much like the Pentyrch tradition meaning yet more work for me on the site. Full credit to John Stubbs for organising the evening.

Last but not least, don't forget that the Downend Summer Rapidplay begins a week tomorrow (June 27th) and for the extra keen, don't forget to check out the latest version of the tournament rules.

12 Jun 2017:

With the league season over, there's still no shortage of chess action to be had. A few weeks ago was the 49th Cotswold Chess Congress which had a great Bristol turnout:

Section Player Pts
Open Robert Taylor 3/6
Open Dave Tipper 2/6
Major Oliver Stubbs 3/6
Major Richard Livermore 2½/5
Minor Jack Tye 4/6

Thanks to John Stubbs, we also have a small gallery from the congress!

A little closer to home, last weekend was the 2017 Bristol Summer Congress, which had an even bigger turnout from the club:

Section Player Pts
Open Lewis Martin 4/5
Open Attila Reznak 3½/5
Open Stephen Meek 3/5
Major Ian Pickup 3½/5
Major Oliver Stubbs 3/5
Major Toby Kan 1/5
Minor Grant Daly 3½/5
Minor Shaun Walsh 3½/5

On a final note, don't forget that the club AGM is tomorrow night and attendance is mandatory!

3 Jun 2017:

It's that time of year again when we're all suffering from chess withdrawal symptoms. Fear not, if that's you (or you simply want to get some practice in at playing with an increment) the Downend Summer Rapidplay is back! Nights are 27th June, 18th July, 8th August and 22nd August. Check out the entry form and for the extra keen, the tournament rules.

For club members, don't forget that our club AGM is a week on Tuesday (13th June) and we'd like as large an attendance as possible as there are lots of important issues to discuss. Especially stern looks of warning go to anyone that won a trophy this year (including as part of a team) as we're hoping to get photographs to record the club's successes.

20 May 2017:

There were over 170 juniors at the Bristol Megafinal at Bristol Grammar School. There were 3 Downend juniors in the U15 section, all doing themselves proud:

Pts Player
5½/6 Oliver Stubbs Supremo
5/6 Thomas Carter Qualifier
2/6 Linton Scotthorne

Three local Bristol & District league juniors collecting their Supremo/Suprema champion trophies from IM Chris Beaumont at prize giving: Yuvraj Kumar (Bath), Acharya Kandara (North Bristol), and our very own Oliver Stubbs (Downend & Fishponds).

18 May 2017:

The increments are coming! The increments are coming! That is to say, the League AGM was a rousing success.

Update: There was such an impressive haul of silverware at the AGM that Dave's put together a gallery for the site.

17 May 2017:

With the league and knockout safely under his belt, Jerry has decided to sack off the rest of the season and the A-team match against Bath A has been cancelled resulting in a walkover for Bath, instead of the 5½-½ win the A-team were probably expecting.

16 May 2017:

The date for the club AGM has been set for the 13th June. We hope to have photographs taken of all the winning teams and maybe a whole club shot, so we'd like as many as possible to attend. There is also a proposal for a 'clock monitor' to check all batteries at regular intervals, so if you fancy that high honour do come along!

14 May 2017:

Downend had another strong showing at a local congress, this time at Frome:

Section Player Pts
Int Oliver Stubbs 3½/5
Int Richard Livermore 3½/5
Int Grant Daly 2½/5
Minor Shaun Walsh 3/5

As a further bonus, Oli's 3½ score won him the grading prize. Plenty of pictures have been taken and compliled into another album for our Gallery page!

9 May 2017:

Downend & Fishponds are quadruple winners! A very strong team of eight managed to defeat an almost equally strong Bath 5-3 in the knockout final. Games from the final and a scathing match report will follow as per tradition.

Don't forget it's not the club AGM next week, but it is the League AGM on Thursday the 18th May!

Update: Games from the night are available, to go with Dave's summary match report (which is somehow more brutal than I ever could've been) and pictures taken on the night.

7 May 2017:

David Kan is keeping us in the know about the performances of our juniors with a Megafinals report.
